Ayberk Coşkun, born in Berlin, has been playing the ‘ûd since the age of thirteen in various ensembles, an instrument he began studying the with the ‘ûd virtuoso and one of the last representatives of the classical style of ‘ûd performance, Nuri Karademirli (1950-2013). Karademirli was himself a student of the renowned ‘ûd players Yorgo Bacanos (1900-1977, gr. Γιώργος Μπατζανός), Kadri Şençalar (1912-1989) and Hrant Kenkulian (1901-1978).
Seeking to fill the gap left by the death of his teacher Nuri Karademirli, he began teaching ‘ûd and musical theory with the desire to foster and continue the legacy of the classical ‘ûd performance. He attended several master classes with renowned international musicians like Kudsi Erguner, Ross Daly and ‘ûd master Yurdal Tokcan. Receiving a scholarship from the Fondazione Giorgio Cini in Venice, he participated in the Bîrûn seminar of the IISMC (Institute for Comparative Music Studies) in 2016 and 2017, where he contributed to the recordings of the CDs Greek Composers of the Ottoman Maqâm (2017) and Music of the Courts from Herat to Istanbul (2018). In addition to his musical performance, he has a degree in economics and has been continuing his studies in musicology at the Humboldt University of Berlin.
