Robert O. Beahrs is an ethnomusicologist, sound artist, and filmmaker from Minnesota currently living in Istanbul. His research examines human-nonhuman geographies, song-based storytelling, and the politics of heritage in Siberia and Inner Asia. He studied music at Pomona College and received his M.A. and Ph.D. in ethnomusicology from the University of California, Berkeley. Beahrs is currently working as a lecturer in ethnomusicology at the Center for Advanced Studies in Music (MIAM) at the Istanbul Technical University. His recent work appears in the Oxford Handbook of Voice Studies and the journal Asian Music. Since 2015, he has been involved in a multimodal project studying music and kinship in the Altai and Sayan Mountains, funded by the Social Sciences Research Council (SSRC) and the Wenner-Gren Foundation.
