Intercultural Creation Session
Age: 29 years old
Giovanni Chirico is a saxophonist, improvisator and compositor from Lecce, Italy. He begins to learn the saxophone in the woodwind street orchestra (“Banda”) of his town, San Michele Salentino. In love with hi instrument he decides to start the high studies. He takes thenDiploma in Classical Saxophone at Conservatorio Di Musica “N. Rota” in Monopoli with highest marks, and a few years takes the Master Degree with honneurs in Jazz Music at Conservatorio Du Musica “N. Piccinni) in Bari.
During his studies he starts to be interested in various musical genres, especially to the music from the Mediterranean and to jazz.
In 2015 he is in tour with a jazz band leaded by Roberto Ottaviano and Giovanni Falzone. The last concert at “Casa del Jazz”, Rome, was recorded and released by ISMEZ. He also performs at other jazz festival in Italy, such as Locomotive Jazz Festival, Nuoro Jazz Festival, Festival Musica Sulle Bocche (Santa Teresa di Gallura, Sardinia), Basilijazz (Matera).
With his first band, Kaìlia, he composes and arranges tunes related to the tradition of southern of Italy and he performs in the most famous Italian etno-festival, La Notte della Taranta, for three consecutive years. Afterwards he enters in the band Bandadriatica, band that plays music inspired by balkans, world music and jazz. With Bandadriarica Giovanni tours various festivals in Spain, France, Greece, Czech Republic.
In 2018 he has the honor to participate at the Intercultural Creation Session at the Frstival of Aix-en-Provence, under the direction of Fabrizio Cassol, with concerts in Air, Marseille, Cassis and Avignon.
Now Giovanni is focusing in his new trio project with a trumpeter and a drummer, looking for the right way to connect the music from southern of Italy and the whole Mediterranean with the avant-garde.
