The Mediterranean Youth Orchestra holds annual auditions in some twenty Mediterranean cities and relies on various partners to build up its membership each year.

MEDINEA SESSIONS:

Musical practices concerned
Improvised music – all styles: traditional Mediterranean music, jazz, etc. Very good instrumental level – ease as an improviser. All instruments and voices.
The pedagogical and creative work during the summer session is conducted in English.

Minimum level required
Very good technique and mastery of the instrument or voice – sustained practise of musical improvisation or even an aptitude for composition. It is not required to have been or to be a student in a higher education institution for the Medinea sessions; The musicians applying for the symphonic session should preferably be students in a higher music institute of a Mediterranean country in 2021-2022. A first experience of intercultural and collective creation will be appreciated.

Candidates must demonstrate their musical skills in their field, particularly in terms of instrumental technique and their talents as improvisers.
Candidates must present one of the two performances as a soloist during the audition, as the jury must be able to grasp the personality and musical universe of the musician during the audition.
An audition lasts a maximum of 15 minutes, including the interview.
The interview will focus on the artistic background and the musical and creative projects of the candidate artist.

Audition test
Candidates must present :
– A standard from their original musical repertoire (traditional piece, jazz standard, etc.)
– A personal composition or arrangement

SYMPHONIC SESSION:

Instruments for the 2022 training session
Violins, violas, cellos, double basses, flutes (piccolo, alto flute), oboes (English horn), clarinets (E-flat clarinet and bass clarinet), bassoons (contrabassoons), French horns, trumpets, trombones (bass trombone), tubas, percussions, harps.

Minimum level required
High instrumental level. Career-oriented higher studies in music. A first orchestra experience is required.

Audition’s test
During her / his audition, the musician has to play:

Candidates are required to demonstrate proficiency in their instrument and in orchestra music (orchestra extracts).
The audition of each musician will last maximum 15 minutes, including a short interview in English or French (depending on the language’s choice of the musician).

CONDITIONS OF PARTICIPATION:

The auditions are open to young artists from the Mediterranean basin but The Mediterranean Youth Orchestra does not cover any costs related to the auditions.

Musicians from the following countries can apply Albania, Algeria, Bosnia, Croatia, Cyprus, Egypt, France, Greece, Israel, Italy, Lebanon, Libya, Macedonia, Malta, Monaco, Morocco, Montenegro, Palestine, Portugal, Slovenia, Spain, Syria, Tunisia, Turkey.

AUDITIONS AND DEADLINES PER COUNTRY:

Albania – The auditions are organised in partnership with the Tirana Academy of Arts.
The auditions will take place at the Art Academy on March 9, 2022.

Algeria – The auditions are organised in partnership with the Institut National Supérieur de Musique d’Alger.
The date and place of the auditions as well as the contact of the person in charge of the registrations will be communicated later.

Cyprus – We are finalising the recruitment of musicians in cooperation with the Cyprus Youth Symphony Orchestra

Croatia – The auditions are organised in partnership with the Zagreb Academy of Music and will take place on 11 January 2022.

Egypt – The auditions are organised in partnership with the Higher National Conservatory.
The date and place of the auditions and the contact person for the registration will be communicated later.

France – The auditions are organised in partnership with :
– the CRR Aix-en-Provence and the IESM Europe et Méditerranée : January 17 and 18 in Aix en Provence at the Conservatoire Darius Milhaud. The deadline for registration for these auditions is Sunday 9 January 2022.
– the CRR Marseille: 21 January in Marseille at the Conservatoire Pierre Barbizet. The deadline for registration for these auditions is Sunday 9 January 2022
– the CRR Avignon: 19 January in Avignon at the Conservatoire du Grand Avignon. The deadline for registration for these auditions is Sunday 9 January 2022
– the CNSMDP Paris: on November 30, 2021. The deadline for registration for these auditions was on November 23, 2021.

We will communicate later the dates and places of the auditions for the other cities.

Greece – The auditions are organised in partnership with the National Conservatory of Athens and the National Conservatory of Thessaloniki.
The audition with the University of Macedonia – Department of Music Science & Art will take place on March 11, 2022.
The audition with the National Conservatory of Athens will take place on March 12, 2022.

Italy – the auditions are organised in partnership with the National Conservatory of Music in Milan on 17 December 2021. The deadline for applications for these auditions is Thursday 9 December 2021.

Lebanon – Our auditions are organized in partnership with the Ghassan Yammine School of Arts and the Lebanese National HigherConservatory of Beirut.
The dates and places of the auditions as well as the contacts of the people in charge of the registrations will be communicated later.

Malta – Our auditions are organised in partnership with ARC Research & Consultancy.
The auditions will be held on 30 March in Valletta.

Montenegro
Our auditions are organised in partnership with the Montenegrin Music Center.

Palestine – We are finalising the recruitment of musicians in cooperation with the National Youth Orchestra of Palestine and the Palestine Youth Orchestra (Edward Said Conservatory)

Portugal – The auditions are being organised in partnership with the Escola Superior de Mùsica de Lisboa on February 12 and 13, 2022.

Slovenia – The auditions are organised in partnership with the Academy of Music of the University of Ljubljana on 12 January 2022. Spain – We are finalising the recruitment of musicians in cooperation with the National Youth Orchestra of Spain Joven Orquesta Nacional de España (JONDE).

Tunisia – The auditions are organised in partnership with the Higher Institutes of Music of Sfax, Sousse and Tunis.

Turkey – Our auditions are organised in partnership with the Istanbul Technical University centre for advanced studies in music (MIAM).

We are also finalising the recruitment of musicians in cooperation with the National Youth Symphony Orchestra of Turkey.

EXCEPTIONAL APPLICATIONS BY VIDEO

Conditions
In certain special cases, the Mediterranean Youth Orchestra is happy to accept video applications, especially if there is no audition organised in one of the Mediterranean countries where there are candidates (e.g. musicians from Syria, Libya, etc.) and in cases where candidates are completely unable to travel to an audition. If you are a resident of one of the countries where an audition is taking place, please note that the Mediterranean Youth Orchestra will systematically give preference to artists who have made the effort to travel to the audition.
